Chickens hanging from the door handles?!

I know this website’s background stems from the amazing food that we all grew up with. However, that doesn’t mean that we liked everything that we grew up with! I was always told  “eat more, you’re too skinny, eat more.” Well, now that I think about it, maybe I didn’t eat that much because I was afraid to! Why? Read on!

I was at my grandparents house quite a bit since they used to watch me after school. I would watch my grandparents make lots of food. Of course I would eat there, I had no choice really or else I’d go hungry. But there were many times I would shy away from food. Why you ask? Well, one reason was that my grandfather loved all types of food, didn’t matter the body part.

He would make soup with fish eye balls, eat pig ears and feet, pour beer into a crab’s shell filled with who knows what and drink up, the list goes on and on. So it would be reasonable to think that a child would question what he was about to eat! But when it came to chicken, no need to worry there. I loved chicken. Until one day…

I had seen chickens running around yards before, never thought about it much, just assumed they were pets. Then one day, while at my grandparents house, I walked downstairs. To my surprise, hanging from the door handle, was a chicken! Huh?! What happened?! Why is that thing hanging there?!

My grandparents would grab the chicken by the neck, break its neck, and then hang it on the door handle. Guess I never thought about how the chicken actually got to the plate in the first place. Well now I knew and I haven’t been the same since! In all seriousness though, it didn’t affect me that much, I still eat chicken! But it’s a fun memory I have growing up with my grandparents!
